The Night Before Christmas

Christmas Eve is my favourite day over the festive season.
The tree is shining its light in my living room
My favourite festive plant is in full bloom

Traditional veggies are awaiting to be chopped for dinner.
Champagne is chilling in the fridge
Crackers will be pulled for festive fun
Sprigs of holly and berries brightening up the mantel

Stocking all ready to be filled with goodies
Mistletoe hanging for lots of kissing. :-)

Full Moon DreamBoard & Honoring the Winter Solstice

Tonight is a solstice lunar eclipse and tomorrow night is the last Full Moon of the Year - how amazing! 3.17am EST, is supposed to be when the Moon will be in deepest shadow, displaying the most fantastic shades of coppery red.

Above is my last Dreamboard for 2010. Where has this year gone I ask myself! As everyone is rushing around, buying presents, wrapping, eating, drinking, going to concerts and parties, I have taken a very conscious decision to look after myself and be calm for the next few weeks of the year. Enjoying every moment, savoring it, being present and honoring this time of year.

I'm intending to celebrate the Solstice to honor the darkness and bring forward the light, similar to what our ancesters would of done during the shortest day.
Join me this week, by taking a moment to honor the winter time. This simple ritual is taken from Barbara Biziou's Family Ritual Book. I'm really starting to experience more of these rituals and traditional ways of honoring our earth and milestones in life. So uplifting and refreshing to get back to some core beliefs.

This is a brief overview on how to honor the darkness and winter time
(you can find a more detailed explanation by following the link above and looking inside the book)

Sit in darkness and surround yourself with
evergreens, holly, mistletoe and other earthy treasures from the season
think about what you can reclaim
this could be something as simple as time
time for yourself
time to reflect on the year about to come to a close
time to enjoy the season with friends and family

Once you have thought about this and set your intentions, start to light candles to call on the light and bring it back, representing the time of change as we start to work our way towards longer sunlight days. Another way to call back the light is to play instruments or music. Also a way of celebrating.

Wising you all a Happy, Healthy Solstice and Season. Enjoy. Xx

Ornament Swap Wrap Up! - Creative Color Challenge Dec 2010

What a fabulous Ornament Swap!

I really got into the festive spirit making mine, so I hope you all did too. We had a lovely group of 56 from around the world participate and I think there are still ornaments winging their way to their new homes as I write this. Check out the full list of participants here.

Above is just a few of the wonderful creations and more photos are being added into the Creative Color Challenge flickr group

There were so many different creations, using fabric, paper, wire, glass, stitch and some very inventive techniques. I posted a "How To" on my ornaments here

If you blogged about the swap, feel free to add your links into the comments below so we can all check out the great posts, ornaments and stories.

For all, (even if you didn't get a chance to participate this time around), what are some of your own ornaments you have made for the festive season over the years? Feel free to post links to any fun techniques or tell us an hand-made ornament story below.

I got my turkey and ham delivered today so its all go go go in my new home with getting ready for hosting a traditional British meal with all the trimmings on Christmas Day.

Christmas Movies for the Soul....which is your favourite?

I love old black and white movies.
I love old movies with a heartfelt message.
I love old movies that I can watch every year at Christmas time and feel a warm fuzzy feeling inside and still shed a tear or two.
One of those movies is "It's a Wonderful life"

Ever since I can remember, this is a movie of Christmas traditions in my family home. Its the only movie that I have seen my father shed a tiny man tear for. Christmas eve, sitting by the Christmas tree, having a glass of something cheery for the festive season and eating a home-made mince pie.

Now in my own home, far away from the family, I watch this movie during the festive season and it still makes me smile and cry and feel that we are all connected in this universe, planet and wonderful life.  So last night, I snuggled up with only the twinkle lights from my tree on, cup of tea, home-made scone (house warming gift from a lovely friend) and watched the movie, uninterrupted. Heaven.
For anyone not seen this movie: George Bailey a happy go lucky guy, has spent his entire life giving of himself to the people of Bedford Falls.... Holding big dreams to travel the world and make a huge difference in the world. Due to circumstances and his strong heart, instead stays in his hometown to take over his fathers banking business and marry his local sweetheart. Many years on,  on Christmas Eve, he finds himself in a situation where he has nowhere to turn. Wishing he had never been born, a Guardian Angel (in search of earning his wings) in human form is sent down to show George how significant his life has been, how he has made amazing differences in peoples lives and by staying in his hometown doing what he has done in his life, has been the greatest gift of all.
This movie reminds me how each of us play an important role, making differences to everyone we meet or that are in our lives. Time to take some reflection and celebrate all the Small Wonders we have such a privilege to witness in this lifetime.

"Remember no man is a failure, who has friends"

What are some of your favourite festive movies you love to watch, cry at, or make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Do you have Christmas movies you watch every year? I'd love to hear about them, please share below. Xx

Interview with Jennifer Lee - Unfolding Your Life Vision.

Jennifer is the founder of Artizen Coaching, and a certified coach, author, artist, and yogini who believes in living life in full color. It was such a delight to meet Jennifer at Squam this past September, where we chatted about visionboards and her fabulous products to help unfold your life's vision. (This is where I also picked up a copy of her "Unfold Your Life Vision Kit" fabulous!)

Please grab a cup of tea or refreshment and spend a few minutes reading about Jennifer below and checking out her fab website.

1) Jennifer, I love the the name Artizen coaching. Where did the name come from and what does it represent?
When I was re-branding my coaching practice back in 2007, I wanted to find a name that captured both my creative, playful side and my grounded, peaceful side. With the help of a branding consultant we landed on Artizen Coaching. I love how it combines both art and Zen and is a play on artisan.

2) I read your great story about your leap from the corporate world to running your coaching business fulltime. What are some of the lessons you learned, that you would want other women entrepreneurs to know about if they are thinking of taking the leap?
Gosh there are so many lessons to share, but I’ll try to highlight a few here. Ask yourself what are you passionate about? What brings you alive? It became very clear to me after co-leading a leadership retreat that, when I was guiding personal growth work rather than being stuck in my corporate job, I was having a much more powerful, positive impact on people and I was feeding my soul. The other key thing is to connect with like-minded people. When I was in my corporate role I networked with other people in my field of organizational and executive development. But I had really no idea that a whole world of entrepreneurs existed outside of the cubicle walls. Once I started to tap into various entrepreneurial networking groups, I learned more about business, got support, and made some great new friends who share a passion for going after their big dreams. They understand what it is like to put yourself out there and take risks.

3) What do you think is one of the major challenges for creative women today in terms of making ideas and dreams happen?

I’d say a major challenge is self-doubt. That can come in many forms. Thinking that they don’t have enough experience and that they must figure everything out before taking that first step. Not trusting their intuition. Comparing themselves to others and not feeling good enough. What I’d encourage instead is to give space for your ideas and dreams to take shape. Nurture them, take small steps to put them out in the world. You’ll make your dreams real and you’ll gather evidence of your creative brilliance.

4) I’m a huge fan of visionboards, and I love your “Unfolding Your Life Vision Kit”. How do you think visionboards and using pictures helps us plan and stay focused?
Aww, glad you love the Unfolding Your Life Vision Kit! The great thing about visionboards is they help you intuitively access feelings and thoughts beyond words and help you quickly connect with the essence of your goals. Visionboards can also make your dreams seem more real. For example, several years ago when I got really clear about wanting to right a book, I prototyped the back of a future book cover and pasted it to my journal. It was cool to have something physical that I could hold in my hands to inspire me on my journey. I like to do the visionboarding first to get a sense of the overall big picture and then detail out the action steps and resources needed to make it all happen. I also like that art is a tangible representation of your vision so your big dreams can easily stay top of mind.

Right-brain Business plan ecourse and ebook.

5) Congratulations on the upcoming launch of your new book The "Right-Brain Business Plan: A Creative, Visual Map for Success” . How have some of your clients used these techniques and what kind of results have they discovered?
Thanks! The Right-Brain Business Plan helps people get past the fear factor in business and encourages them to leverage their natural creative genius. Clients have used these playful techniques to create all different types of visual business plans including a leather cuff bracelet, a paper-plate mobile, and an altered children’s book. Recently a past e-Course participant named her Right-Brain Business Plan “Emmit” and gave him a hilarious personality and a clown nose! Some examples of results achieved include launching websites, getting clear on their perfect customers and landing new clients, hiring help for their business, offering new products and services, and more. You can visit the Right-Brain Business Plan spotlights section to see more creative examples and to read about what people have accomplished after doing their Right-Brain Business Plan.

6) I’m also a fan of rituals and celebrating milestones in our lives. What are some of your daily rituals you swear by to keep you focused, creative and present? And do you have any favorites you like to share with friends?
I like to journal in the morning before I get out of bed. It helps to clear my mind. Practicing yoga helps me stay grounded and present. I also keep my Right-Brain Business Plan and collaged values cards in my office where I can easily see them.

One of my other rituals is every other week, for the past two years, I participate in a 90-minute call with my Nurture Huddle. We’re a small group of creative bloggers who get together to help support each other in our creative process and in going after our big dreams. Their support and encouragement have been invaluable.
Jennifer's upcoming book (available for pre-order). So excited to get a copy myself.

7) What are some of the exciting goals and milestones you have already visioned for 2011?
2011 is going to be a big year with lots of exciting new adventures! I envision putting myself out there in a much more expansive way so I can reach more creative entrepreneurs who want to make their dreams come true. I see a fun, joyous, and successful book launch in February that will include a cool and informative virtual event for right-brainers in business. I’ll also start an intensive coaching/mentoring program for creative entrepreneurs later on in the year. E-Courses and fun new products are also in the works. I would also love to attend a writer’s retreat and to go on a vacation to Hawaii with my hubby.

Thanks, Louise for these fabulous questions and for being the creative inspiration you are!

Thanks to Jennifer for spending the time to answer these questions to share with us.

Jennifer runs coaching sessions for professional women, live workshops, ecourses and has some wonderful downloadable and “through the mail” products. Check out all her fabulousness here. Jennifer is also author of The "Right-Brain Business Plan: A Creative, Visual Map for Success"(out in mid Feb 2011) The book is already on my wishlist.

Big Dreams Small Wonders
I have purchased and use Jennifer’s products myself and some of the concepts Jennifer discusses above such as visionboarding and exercises for our right brain are covered in my ecourse “Big Dreams. Small Wonders”. Visioning our future life and stretching our right brain is so important and I hope you will check out all of these great resources.

Registration for "Big Dreams.Small Wonders" is OPEN and we already have a great group of creative souls ready to make 2011 their year. So excited. :-)

The mantel piece and my new easel in the art studio *Love*

I've been working hard these past few days to unpack all the boxes and bags from my move. I'm so happy to say I'm starting to feel so at home. My fairy lights were the first things to get unpacked and put up. It made my first night in so cosy. I wanted to share some sneak peek photos of the new space and promise to add more as I tidy up completely! So here goes.....

My first tree I bought six years ago when I first arrived in the US, now sits overlooking the street, full of light.

How To: Make My Holiday Ornaments

I have been having lots of fun making these really cute simple ornaments both for the Ornament Swap Color Challenge and for my First Friday Giveaway (still time to enter). These are so easy to make, I wanted to show you so if you wanted to fill your tree with similar ornaments or give as gifts, you can create these in a jiffy!

First of all, grab your supplies above. I used 1 inch glass tiles, various ribbons (cut@ approx11 inch strips), silver and copper wire (cut@ approx11 inch strips), tools and flat heart findings for the extra pizazz!)

 1) Wrap your ribbon around the glass tile leaving equal amounts of ribbon at the top
2) Hold the ribbon and tile in one hand and with the other, place the middle section of the wire over the tile and wrap around securing the ribbon. This can be as randomly wrapped as you wish.  Work the wire towards the top and leave about 1/2 an inch on either ends of the wire.

3) Wrap the remainder of the wire around the ribbon at the top of the glass tile to hold it all in place.

4) Carefully slide the flat finding under the wire to finish it off. There you have it!

I cant wait to get my tree next weekend as many of these will be hanging on it along with lots of lovely hand-made ornaments from some of you. :-) Also perfect for a tree trimming party I'm going to in a few weeks. If you do make some of your own, please either blog your lovely creations or take a photo and send me a link. If you have your own tutorial for an ornament, please feel free to post in the comments below too! Happy Holiday Creating. :-)

Pop by on Tuesday for the winner of First Friday's Giveaway.

First Friday Giveaway - DECEMBER

hi everyone, well the festive season has started around here and as we are almost at the end of our Ornament Swap, I thought a little selection of similar ornaments I made for my swap partners would be perfect for my First Friday Giveaway for December.

These are all hand-made with glass, ribbon, wire some with a heart or star. I'm going to give away 3 sets of 3 ornaments so 3 of you have a lovely chance of winning this month. The winner will be selected randomly and Ill announce on my post next Tuesday.
Pop back on Sunday also and I'll post a "how I made these".

TO WIN: All you need to do is add a comment below telling me about the ornament that has the most memory for you this holiday season. If you dont have one, then let me know about your favourite ornament and why its your favourite.

For me, my most memorable ornament is the fairy that still today sits on the top of the Christmas tree in my parents house. Every year for as long as I can remember my mum would bring out our little fairy who had been asleep all year with the other decorations. She was an old doll of mine, about 6 inches tall, with a big smile on her face and blonde curly hair. Her fairy dress was all white with glitter and we had made it out of crepe paper (she got a new dress a few years ago!) She has a silver wand with a star in one hand and the other hand holds a paper bottle of champagne! I love seeing her on the top of the tree, smiling down on the family, casting some wishes for the festive season and year ahead.

Whats your most memorable ornament or Christmas decoration and why?

Moving Forwards. The Apartment Story

Today is moving day and Monday I promised to tell the story. So here goes......

During the summer this year, I blogged about the front garden, cultivating seeds, nurturing them, watching them grow and bloom true. I talked about planting our own seeds for creative dreams to grow. Well little did I know that by being outside over the summer, meeting the neighbors as they walked their dogs and planting physical seeds for the sunflowers, I was also planting other seeds into the universe that were also being cultivated and nurtured ready to bloom when the time was right.

Fast forward to Labor day weekend (which is the first weekend in September). I had been thinking about renting some separate studio space to paint in as my apartment was feeling too cluttered and a few things in my personal life were causing some upset related to my existing living arrangements, so a friend come over to stay for the weekend to keep me company. The neighborhood was lovely and peaceful and many people were away for the weekend. After telling my friend about the "Step of Contemplation" and some of the serendipitous things that seem to occur whist sitting there or walking around my neighborhood, we decided to sit on them, have our cup of coffee (in our pyjamas) and watch the world go by. It was about 8.30am on the Saturday so a great way to start the day.

We sat on the step, coffee in hand, morning sun on our faces and the balmy breeze was blowing through the trees around us. I talked about my current personal dilemma, thoughts of needing to move out into a new place, wondering what to do. The conversation went something like this:
Me: "I feel like I need to move out, move on somewhere new. This apartment is starting to feel too small, and things just aren't working out. I really feel like i need a proper studio space to work in"
Friend: Me too, i'm fed up with the city, the concrete, Hoboken is so lovely, the trees, the neighborhood......[pause] maybe I could move to Hoboken?" I looked at my friend, who had not spoken of this before. "Maybe we could move into somewhere together?" she said.
Me: "Yeah! My lease runs out the end of November."
Friend: "Well i don't think I'll want to move until then anyway, I've got too much going on until then"
Me: "oooh sounds great! What sort of place would we need?"
Friend: "Well we would need a 2 bedroom"
Me: "and I'd love an extra room for an art studio"
Friend: "i'd also like an extra room for my studies also"
Me: "Maybe even a shared lounge space we can throw parties in and have dinner parties too"
Friend: "and a nice kitchen to cook and bake in"
Me: "Sounds great" [sigh] "but I love this block and street so much, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else really. The trees are so lovely and its got such a great feel."

We both paused, dreaming a little, taking a sip of coffee and believing that one day, we could have this.

Along the road I could see Christine walking her dog. I had met Christine a handful of times over the summer when she has stopped to chat about our progress with the garden and our seed planting. The conversation went like this:

Me: "Hi Christine, how are you?"
Christine: "Good thanks" her dog started to jump up to say hello to us as we sat on the steps.
Me: "Not away this weekend?"
Christine: "No, I have a few things going on"
Me: Yes its nice staying in town when everyone else is away isnt it? So quiet!"
Christine: "Definitely! But its not that quiet for me as I have the builders in"
Me: "Oh really, what do you have going on"
Christine: "Oh I'm renovating my duplex apartment upstairs"
[pause, suddenly realizing the universe was at work here]
Me: "Duplex apartment?" I asked
Christine: "yes, my tenants moved and im now renovating the whole 2 floors, going to be wonderful"
Both my friend and I suddenly sat up taller, wanting to find out more.
Me: "You are looking to rent your apartment?"
Christine: "Yes, its a 2 bedroom, 2 den, living room, dining room, 2 bathrooms and lovely kitchen. its going to be wonderful when its all done, lots of work though.
Me: "When do you think it will be finished?"
Christine: "end of November time"

Well you can imagine how we both felt. When Christine walked away after we set up some time to see the place, my friend suddenly realized she didn't know where the apartment was.
"Nine doors down the street" I said.
"So you wont have to move off this block afterall!"
"no, how amazing is that!"

So thank you universe. I planted the idea seed out there, thought about my studio space (which is also on my visionboard) and still today I am amazed by the serendipity in this story. What if we hadn't sat on that step at 8.30am, what if I didn't cultivate those sunflower seeds and made this acquaintance in the first place? Would the universe have found another way?

Over these past few months, I have been constantly flabbergasted by "coincidences" "messages" and what seems like the universe at work. I do believe that when we are on the right path, these kind of occurrences start to appear to guide us, show us the way and reinforce it is all going to work out. I wish for us all to "Believe" it is possible.

Dont stop thinking about what it is you need to help you move forward. The right path, meeting the right people and the direction to move in will be shown, I am so sure of it.

I cant wait to share photos of my new wonderful space. :-)

On another note: My new ecourse "Big Dreams. Small Wonders" is now open for registration.
